Physics Education Study Program (PS) as an educational institution that provides education and teaching to undergraduate students (S1), is one of the study programs included in the Department of Physics, FMIPA UNG which was established 22 years ago. Initially the Physics Education Study Program as part of the FKIP UNSRAT in Gorontalo fostered the Diploma 3 (D3) Program, and since 1987 has developed the Strata 1 (S1) Physics Education Program. Then in its development this study program became one of the Study Programs of the MIPA Department of STKIP Gorontalo in Gorontalo based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Number 253/DIKTI/Kep/1996, which was stipulated in Jakarta on July 11, 1996.

With the policy of the Director General of Higher Education, the acceptance of the diploma program ended in 1990. The Physics Education study program developed the Bachelor of Physics Education Study Program based on the Presidential Decree No. 9 of 1993 dated January 16, 1993. In 1996 the Physics Education Undergraduate Study Program became part of the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Education Department STKIP Gorontalo State, then changed to Department of Physics Education FPMIPA IKIP Gorontalo State with the Presidential Decree No. 19 of 2001 dated February 5, 2001. Finally, it became the Department of Physics, FMIPA, State University of Gorontalo, stipulated by Presidential Decree No. 54 of 2004 dated June 23, 2004.

Currently, the Physics Education Study Program has been accredited with the A (Very Good) Accreditation Predicate based on the Decree of the Chairman of BAN-PT No. 1140/SK/BAN-PT/Ak-SURV/S/VII/2016
